In Manhattan these days, subway accidents are becoming very common. In 2012, subway trains struck 141 people, and 55 people died from mass transit accidents. In 2011, of 146 people hit by subway trains, 47 of the injuries were fatal. Recently, another death was recorded when a man jumped from a subway platform. This series of unfortunate events have caught the attention of the Manhattan Borough President. He requested the Metropolitan Transit Authority to survey the subway and improve its safety.
The latest incident of a subway death happened in Times Square when a man jumped from a platform, and an uptown No. 2 train struck him. The president of the borough has urged the MTA to audit safety standards on the subways. Injuries and deaths recorded in the subways have caught the attention of many people. Concerns regarding public safety continue to rise among commuters.
The MTA responded to the request of the president. The agency said that it continues to educate commuters on matters like standing away from the edge of the platform. This came about because of the incident in December 2012 when two people were pushed to their deaths at a subway station.
Trains travel at a high speed in the New York subway system, which is convenient for commuters. However, sadly, the subway system claims many lives and injures others because of that speed. Some incidents are preventable, like slipping on platforms and falling onto railings.
